I tell my residents that expertise is when your emotions and physical sensations are integrated with your knowledge. Growth seems to come from experience, reflection, teaching, then more experience. But the variation, that's a critical part. From the strength training world, you can't do the same routine for long otherwise your body adapts and stops responding to the stimulus. I believe it's the same for the brain and learning skills. Variable, intermittent challenges that feel significant for the practitioner are the key
